Maurene Comey, High-Profile Federal Prosecutor and Daughter of Ex-FBI Director, Fired Amid DOJ Turmoil

Maurene Comey, a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York, was dismissed from her position by the U.S. Department of Justice. Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, had been involved in several high-profile cases, including those against financier Jeffrey Epstein, his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, and music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs.

The exact reasons for her termination remain unclear, as both the Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan declined to comment. However, her dismissal has raised questions, particularly given her familial ties to James Comey, who was dismissed by President Donald Trump during his first term. Additionally, President Trump has reportedly been under investigation, along with former CIA Director John Brennan, in connection with the Russia probe.

At the time of her firing, Maurene Comey was leading the prosecution of Sean “Diddy” Combs in a sex trafficking and racketeering case. The jury acquitted Combs of the major charges but convicted him of prostitution-related offenses. She had also previously prosecuted Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of sex trafficking and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Maxwell is currently appealing her conviction.

In an internal farewell message, Comey emphasized the importance of integrity in the legal profession, quoting the Department of Justice’s ethos: “Without Fear or Favor.” She urged her colleagues to uphold these principles in the face of challenges.

Her dismissal comes amid a broader context of political tensions and controversies within the Department of Justice. Earlier in 2025, several prosecutors resigned in protest over orders to dismiss corruption charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams, leading to comparisons with the 1973 Saturday Night Massacre.

As of now, the Department of Justice has not provided further details regarding the circumstances of Maurene Comey’s termination.
